After starring in Apple‘s veteran drama Causeway and crime drama series Dope Thief and earning major awards recognition for both, Brian Tyree Henry has inked a deal to star opposite Alien: Romulus alum Spike Fearn in Running, Apple Original Films’ new film from director Gavin O’Connor which we scooped in November 2025.

Character details are under wraps. Based on an original story by O’Connor, Running follows a homeless high school running prodigy on the hunt for greatness as he uses his gifts to outrun his past and find a family.

Speaking previously to the origins of the film, O’Connor said that as someone who lives in Los Angeles, “I started thinking about building a story around a homeless kid who doesn’t have a place in the world. No love. No friends. No family. The only home he knows is the streets. It felt like a great place to begin a character’s journey and tell an underdog story about the human spirit.”

Ozark‘s Bill Dubuque penned the script. Hailing from Apple Studios, the film will be produced by Makeready and Nike.

Henry both exec produced and starred in Dope Thief, Apple TV’s series helmed by Ridley Scott, which earned him Emmy and Critics Choice Award nominations, among other accolades. He starred opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Causeway, for which he earned his first Academy Award nomination.

This fall, Henry has Netflix’s adult animated series Bass X Machina, where he’s exec producer and star. Other upcoming projects include Sam Esmail’s Warner Bros. thriller Panic Carefully, the Wagner Moura-directed Last Night at the Lobster, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. He is repped by Jennifer Wiley-Moxley of JWM Entertainment Group, CAA, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
