EXCLUSIVE: Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead, Hit Man) has joined the recurring cast of FX‘s The Lowdown for Season 2. Previously announced Season 2 additions also include Betty Gilpin and Tommy Lee Jones.
From creator Sterlin Harjo, the first season of The Lowdown follows the gritty exploits of citizen journalist Lee Raybon (Ethan Hawke), a self-proclaimed Tulsa “truthstorian” whose obsession with the truth is always getting him into trouble. While Lee’s no idealist, he’s fiercely committed to exposing corruption and unearthing the city’s hidden rot, even when it puts him at risk.
In Season 1, the publication of Lee’s latest exposé – a deep dive into the powerful Washberg family – is immediately followed by the suspicious suicide of Dale Washberg (Tim Blake Nelson), and Lee knows he’s stumbled onto something big. Following a trail of breadcrumbs Dale has left behind, urging someone to dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding his death, Lee does just that.
The show’s freshman season also starred Keith David and featured guest stars Kyle MacLachlan, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Michael “Killer Mike” Render, Kaniehtiio Horn, Tracy Letts, Peter Dinklage, and the late Graham Greene.
The acclaimed Western noir series was renewed for a second season in January, with production currently underway in Tulsa, OK, this spring. The series’ first season was recognized by the AFI Awards as one of the 10 most outstanding TV programs of 2025 and is among the year’s most acclaimed series.
The Lowdown is created by Harjo, who executive produces with Garrett Basch, Hawke, Ryan Hawke, Duffy Boudreau and Scott Teems. In Season 1, Harjo also wrote and directed various episodes. The Lowdown is produced by FX Productions, with all episodes currently available to stream on Hulu.
Amelio reunites with series star Hawke following their work on the historical drama The Weight, which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Before that, he wrapped work on Ron Howard’s Alone at Dawn opposite Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway. He also starred in Damian McCarthy’s Hokum and Family Movie, both of which are premiering at SXSW 2026. He can most recently be seen in Bunnylovr, which is being released theatrically on April 10th. Additional film credits include Hit Man, Everybody Wants Some, and Song to Song.
On TV, Amelio is best known for playing Dwight in AMC’s The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. He can also recently be seen in the HBO Original Spanish-language series, When No One Sees Us.
Amelio is represented by UTA, Stride Management, and JSSK.
